Peggy Shepard, founder and executive director of Region 2 TCTAC WE ACT for Environmental Justice, spoke to the Associated Press about the Biden administration imposing strict new limits on dust from lead-based paint in older homes and child care facilities. Shepard, who serves on the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council, said New York state leads the nation in cases of children with elevated blood levels. Black children in Harlem living below the poverty line are twice as likely to suffer from lead poisoning as poor white children. “We can all breathe a little easier now that the EPA has significantly lowered its dust lead standard to protect children,” Shepard said. MSN, USA Today, Yahoo! News, PBS News Hour, the Charlotte Observer, Boston Globe, Indianapolis Star, Arizona Republic, Des Moines Register, Tennessean, Detroit Free Press, and numerous other outlets shared the AP report.
